The SLSF depot is immediately south of
the Garrison Avenue bridge and begins District 300 on the Frisco track
charts. There are more downtown business with rail service and some of
the remaining furniture factories from the days when Fort Smith was a
leading producer of home and business furnishings. Between the Frisco
and the junction of the Poteau and Arkansas rivers the Missouri Pacific
maintains a small yard to handle local switching and interchange. The
Kansas City Southern formerly had its own bridge over the Poteau River,
but now uses trackage rights on the Frisco to reach its small yard and
the handful of remaining customers. Chief among these is the OK Foods
feed mill. Fort Smith’s most complex track
work occurs when the Mopac swings east, crossing the Frisco and KCS,
with connecting tracks for interchange. With three railroads serving a
variety of customers, there’s usually some action in this neighborhood.
There are rumors that the fledgling
Fort Smith Trolley Museum is negotiating to buy some old commercial
property and revamp the old street trackage for their restored trolleys.
You may want to check out their collection of steam, diesel and trolley
equipment next time you travel through the city. |
