The GC&SF was Santa Fe's Texas corporate identity in Texas, a requirement under Texas law. The GC&SF had three secondary mains; one from Paul's Valley OK, to Galveston, TX; one from Galveston to Clovis, NM, and one from Fort Worth to San Angelo and on to the Mexican border.

We model a portion of the main from Galveston to Clovis, and the main from Fort Worth to San Angelo.

Layout Description:

The modeled portion of the GC&SF is centered in Brownwood, TX, where 4 subs (districts) meet; The Lampasas Sub (goes to Temple), The Dublin Sub (goes to Fort Worth), The Sweetwater Sub (goes to Sweetwater) and the San Angelo Sub (goes to San Angelo). In addition to local traffic, the subs carry all traffic from Dallas, Fort Worth and Houston to the ATSF transcon and the west coast. Also modeled is the San Saba sub, a branch running from Lometa to Eden, TX.

The S.P (T&NO), M-K-T, and T&P trackage modeled consists of branch line trackage which interchanges with the GC&SF.

There is some industry in Brownwood, Dublin and Burnet, but most of the towns are rural farming communities with their usual shippers. Near Brownwood is Camp Bowie, an army camp reactivated for the Korean war.

The era modeled is 1951. Steam is still common on the GC&SF, but most trains west of Brownwood have switched to diesel power, because of poor water quality in West Texas.

There are ten towns modeled on the GC&SF, as well as two served exclusively by the other railroads. Another eight towns are represented by staging tracks. All staging is visible.

Operating Scheme

Cat movements are controlled by car cards. Hand-written switch lists are recommended for the local freights , which run with 2-man crews. The locals are 12-14 cars long, while manifest freights and extras are 16-20 care long. A typical session includes:

Locals: 10 trains - 5 GC&SF and 5 other railroads
Manifest freights & extras: 8-10 trains
Passenger: 4 trains
