The
Sierra Lines- Old Town Yard |
|
The Old Town Yard is
approximately 25 feet long, and is divided into two sets of
classification tracks (west end and east end) by the Grand Central
Station. Classification tracks on the
west end contain 48 spots, and are for westbound trains, the Docks, and
Sacramento Uptown. A caboose track, RIP track, and a small engine
service area are also located here. When operating in the 4-interchange
mode, the west end of the yard belongs to Western Pacific, and contains
their interchange track. |

Overview of the Old Town yard from
West End and a view of the town station. |
|
The station is a Faller kit (B-113),
modified slightly to look more American. Behind the station on the upper
level a tourist train of 4 1890s cars departs daily behind a Virginia &
Truckee 4-4-0 for a round trip to Incline Village. Passengers on SP
Daylight trains headed east to Salt Lake City, Denver, or Chicago, or
west to Oakland or San Francisco descend from the station to loading
platforms below. Up to 4 Daylight passenger trains run daily (2
eastbound, 2 westbound). |
 |
 |
The east end of the
Old Town yard contains additional engine service facilities and
classification tracks for Marysville, the Industrial Park, and eastbound
trains (44 spots). When operating in the 4-interchange mode, the east
end of the yard belongs to Southern Pacific, and contains their
interchange track.
To the right of the yard in figure 130 is part of the Industrial Park
area of Sacramento showing Laughrey’s Ice Cream and the Icing dock.
Farther to the right, on the upper level, are 6 industries on J-Street.
These are no longer used during most sessions, because they are not
easily reached by shorter operators, and we have plenty of other work to
do. |
